Pinoy Magazine: “P-pop is not a genre”

|

P-pop's logo under Viva Records

Pinoy Magazine recently cleared out that P-pop is not a genre but a label of Viva Records. In other words, XLR8, Pop Girls, and RPM were the only official p-pop groups. Therefore, Down To Mars, A-Five, Voyz Avenue, Sakto, Pointen and 1:43 could not be call P-pop.

On a side note,  Popsicles website used the term “P-pop”, which stands as “Pinoy Populars,” to refer to the Philippines entertainment industry. Thinking of kpop, members of our original forum gprimetime were confused of the word P-pop since we didn’t have that upbeat type of music back then. Surprising all of the forum members, Viva Records released the first p-pop group Pop Girls on late 2009. Who’d have thought somebody will actually make one? Our staff members were just dreaming about it.

Here’s Pinoy Magazine’s statement:

Hi everyone! Just want to clarify something. Lately there have been a lot of Male Groups coming out and categorizing themselves as “P-POP” group well in fact, “P-Pop” is a sub-label of Viva Records, not a music genre that includes XLR8, RPM & Pop Girls ONLY. Ang dami kasing nakiki-ride (so many bandwagoners)…so there. Peace out! :-)

Spread the word and feed your friend’s mind with correct info! :-)

If these pop artists are not P-pop, what should we call them? Fpop, Phil-pop, Fil-pop, Flip-pop?  Music icon Gary Valenciano referred to it as Fili-POP . Any ideas?

  4. J. Mon says:

P-pop still stands for Philippine Pop. And that’s just what it is, a term used for Pop music in the Philippines. Therefore, ANY pop music from the Philippines will still be considered P-pop . It just so happens that there’s a record label called P-pop based on the term Philippine Pop.

XLR8, RPM, Pop Girls are P-pop groups under the label P-pop, and 1:43 is still a P-pop group under the label MCA Music.

We don’t need to call it anything else. P-pop is a genre AND it is also the name of a record label.

I completely agree with J. Mon. P-pop IS a label under Viva records but that doesn’t mean that the actual genre doesn’t exist. What right have they to say that other pop groups can’t call their type of music P-pop? Just because they “started” it first? P-pop the label and P-pop the genre are two entirely different things.

I say we should still classify the other acts as P-pop.

  6. BAKEET NAMAN says:

To VIVA : Palitan nyo ng name yung records nyo.

K-pop Records? Or J-pop Records? WHAT THE F*CK.

Or other genres, like Rock Records? RnB Records? Acoustic Records? Jazz Records?

NAPAKASELFISH NAKAKAINIS!!

Sorry for the bad words. Kelangan ko lang ilabas yung galit ko. Nakakainis kasi. Seryoso. Kasi madidiscourage na mag-produce yung ibang companies kasi VIVA LANG DAW PWEDENG MAGPRODUCE NG P-POP GROUP E DIBA? :| ||

    Sana mabasa to ng VIVA.
Para malaman nilang it’s not a good idea to name a company “P-pop Records”
    Ahhh.
(XLR8 and Pop Girls with two substitutes sa PP, it’s f*cking pathetic. Di man lang nila mapromote yung XLR8 at Pop Girls sa ibang station, unlike Mocha Girls, Kitty Girls, Pointen,)Wag na tayong umasa.

    VIVA,

You guys just decreased alot of people’s interest and RESPECT to your company’s artists and unfortunately you specified the name of the groups very well. With your statement this only reflected on how you guys produce your artists. Sorry to say..mejo BASTOS.

And we have read this from one of the most reliable Filipino music online news, popsicles:

This why 1:43 never claimed that they are P-Pop.

Ang Down to Mars, K-Pop daw sila. Ang sabi nila dati sa interview nila “WE WON’T SING TAGALOG SONGS BECAUSE IT IS CHEAP!”

VIva records doesn’t even know what the flippin heck they are talking about. There is no such company called P-Pop like you Viva Records are saying. P-Pop is a genre therefore, A-five, 1:43 and the others are under P-Pop as well. What a bunch of idiots Viva Records re. XLR8 Pop-Girls are not the only P-Pop.

Yet, I agree above who says let go of XLR8 as they are not spreading their talents as they are always stuck in GMA. XLR8 needs to be spread around the network.

Gee, I don’t even know what to say anymore. All I can say is Viva Records are fucked up when it comes to P-Pop. To be honest, they can’t even make a proper Music Video for XLR8.

P-pop is not a genre. Pop music itself is not a genre as it stands for POPULAR music, as in mjsoc that is considered trendy. Back in the 1920′s jazz musoc was POP music, now it is not.

I never thought that this was happening. Grabe naman ang VIVA. They disappointed the people. Who do they think they are. Pop industry in the country is still on the process of having its own name, tapos ngaun, ito gagawin nila? What a shame. Is money all they want? How dare they to do that. They have no right to have that copyrighted. Kasi naman, for general use yan eh. They are so wise but in a way stupid. I hope all these comments from the very beginning up to the end will reach them. Very sad.

  29. VIVNOT says:

A.) P-Pop is a genre, not something that VIVA can freely coin themselves. There are other groups out there working for other companies who also fall into the genre. So this little snippet from the magazine is bull shiet. On top of that, VIVA is stupid for thinking they can trademark a whole genre just for themself.

B.) As talented as I think XLR8 is, I think their potential is being repressed by VIVA, the CHEAPEST company I’ve ever seen. Their music videos are so LAZY. They can’t even build their own sets at all! They rent out arcades, laser tag studios and homes to film their music videos? They have minimal scene changes, and the quality on their videos is ridiculous shoddy. Pop Girls last MV was released into youtube on 240p. That’s embarrassingly low quality. They can’t match up the quality of any country out there, I even saw better things coming out of Mongolia. Meanwhile other countries like Japan and Korea are out there making extremely high quality music videos with cameras operating on the latest technology (some even invented by them themselves) and here we are with music videos that a high schooler could even make better. Shame to VIVA.

C.) VIVA’s talent scouting is awful and their whole age policy thing is ridiculous and unheard of. Look at those fat Harrissah twins they scouted who couldn’t make it and are trying to spread lies about some fake group they have coming up. VIVA get a grip of reality and realize what’s out there. You can’t get away with crap. Do a favor for the Philippines and put out a good music video and hire real talent. Enough with those crappy countdowns and credits in the beginning too. That was so 90s – Scratch that – 80s.
